Belarusian democratic leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya held two briefings with international partners on September 1 and 2. She met with diplomats from Latin American countries, Spain and Portugal, as well as with representatives of 17 EU countries.
Tsikhanouskaya urged European partners to maintain sanctions until systemic changes occur in Belarus. Key topics included the release of political prisoners, cooperation with Ukraine, and the risk of Belarus being drawn further into the war.
She proposed to diplomats from Latin American countries that they develop direct contacts with Belarusian democratic forces and support Belarusian issues at the UN.
"The situation in the region is changing rapidly, and it is important for us to constantly keep international partners informed about what is happening in Belarus. Such meetings provide an opportunity to discuss changes in detail, explain our needs and agree on further steps," Tsikhanouskaya said.
She stressed that repression in Belarus continues, new detentions are taking place, and people are still being jailed for their beliefs. According to her, Belarus must remain on the international agenda, and efforts to secure the release of all political prisoners and end persecution must continue.
