Deutsche Welle reporter Paulyuk Bykouski has been indicted in ‘the BelTA case’. The journalist will have to pay a compensation of slightly over 4000 rubles ($2000) for the damage to the state new agency BelTA.
Paulyuk Bykouski has pled guilty and is going to pay the compensation.
"This is my personal approach, the tactical move I have chosen. The other suspects in this case should necessarily do the same," the well-known journalist and media export told BAJ.
Six employees of TUT.by, BelaPAN editor-in-chief Iryna Leushyna and BelaPAN reporter Tacciana Karaviankova have also been indicted.
The people involved in ‘the BelTA case’ are not allowed to leave Belarus.
The editorial offices of the information company BelaPAN, Internet portal TUT.by and some other mass media as well as some of their employees’ flats were searched on August 7–9. Iryna Leushyna, Tatstsyana Karavyankova, TUT.by editor-in-chief Maryna Zolatava, TUT.by editors Hanna Kaltyhina, Halina Ulasik, Hanna Yermachonak, Deutsche Welle staff correspondent Paulyuk Bykouski, editor of the website of Belorusy I Rynok Alyaksei Zhukau were arrested. They spent a few days in the detention centre in Akrestsina Street. All of them had to sign a non-disclosure pledge.
