Belarus is ready to restore military communication channels with NATO if the alliance's member states are prepared to do so. Foreign minister Maksim Ryzhenkov said this in an interview with the Russian news agency TASS.
"If they are ready to return to some kind of verifications, to some kind of early warnings, we will not stand in the way — we will, of course, go along with that", said the head of the foreign policy department.
In his view, restoring such mechanisms would help reduce the risk of military incidents and increase mutual predictability. Ryzhenkov is open even to limited early warning and verification measures. These would allow both sides to better understand each other's actions and gain greater confidence that certain steps are not directed against them.
At the same time, the head of Belarusian diplomacy placed the responsibility for dismantling these instruments on Western countries. Ryzhenkov claimed that they "sought to expand the possibilities of weapons use and to draw more states into the use of strategic weapons."
