Alexander Lukashenko described the current relations between Minsk and Washington as not bad. He made these remarks while receiving a briefing from Belarus's Permanent Representative to the UN, Valentin Rybakov.
"The situation developing in our relations, and especially the dynamics and prospects, are not bad," Lukashenko said.
He tasked Rybakov with working on the normalisation of Belarusian-American relations. "You are working in close contact with John Coale. Convey my best wishes to him and his wonderful wife," Lukashenko stated.
John Coale is the US President's Special Representative for Belarus. His visits to Minsk over the past months have been consistently accompanied by the release of Belarusian political prisoners. In exchange, the United States has eased sanctions against Lukashenko's regime.
After meeting with Lukashenko, Rybakov revealed that he had delivered new proposals from the leadership of the United States: "Literally a few days ago, certain new proposals from the US were formulated and addressed to us."
